Newark prosecutor appointed in Brown case

MOUNT VERNON — An attorney from the Newark City Prosecutor’s Office has been appointed to try domestic violence and assault charges brought against a former police chief.

Newark City Prosecutor Douglas E. Sassen “or one of his assistant directors of law” will serve as prosecutor for charges brought against Roger Brown, 48, Butler, according to Mount Vernon Municipal Court records. Brown, who recently retired as Fredericktown Police Chief, is charged with assaulting a female member of his home Dec. 22. Brown has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mount Vernon Municipal Court Judge John Thatcher granted a temporary protection order Monday for the alleged victim. Per the order, the victim will have exclusive possession of the residence. Brown will live with his father in the meantime.

Brown’s bond was set at $5,000 with additional conditions that he adhere to the temporary protection order, does not use illegal drugs or alcohol and complies with pre-trial probation and random alcohol screenings.

Thatcher has requested a visiting judge from the Ohio Supreme Court to hear the case, due to Brown being a former police chief and the victim a city employee.
