SPARTA — After defeating Utica last week, the Highland Fighting Scots girl’s volleyball team have made it to the Sweet 16 in Division II volleyball tournament play. The Fighting Scots will play a regional semifinal against John Glenn tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Heath.

Coach Rob Terrill spoke about how thrilled he was for his team to make it to the regional semifinals and about how his team expects to make it to the state finals.

“We’re in the Sweet 16,” Terrill said. “This is our first time to get a district championship in our school’s history in Division II. It means a lot. We went to state three years ago and that was when we were Division III and then we made the move to Division II the next year. For this year we just had to go back to the drawing board and keep working hard and getting girls to buy in and sacrifice and commit. It feels good. We know what it’s like to be at state (at the Division III level) and to be those final four. Now we’re just looking to close the deal and get there again. We’ve been around for several years at the highest level, so we kind of expect to be there. We want to keep pushing forward.”

He also spoke about the up-coming game against John Glenn High School and how the Muskies compare to some of the other teams that the Fighting Scots have beaten so far in the tournament.

“I think John Glenn offers a good challenge for us. Utica offered a certain challenge. London offered us a certain challenge. River Valley offered a certain challenge; so did Bexley,” he said. “Each team gives us a certain feel and we have to adapt our game to it, but at the same time we don’t want to change what we do unless we have to.”

Senior Gena West spoke about the nature of the Fighting Scot team as a unit and of how happy she was about her team advancing to the regionals

“I feel really good. I feel very happy with the way our team is progressing,” West said. “We’re a family and as long as we keep playing as a family I think we can go very far.”

Senior Raina Terry spoke about how dedicated the Fighting Scots are during practice.

“This is great,” said Terry. “The past two years we’ve lost in district championships, so I think making it this far this year feels great. We value every minute in the gym. There’s not a single minute in the gym where we just relax. We value every single minute and work our hardest every time.”
