MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon woman was indicted by the grand jury Monday on two misdemeanors and a felony after she escaped custody from police.
Amanda Shafer, 33, was arrested and charged for criminal trespass, which is a misdemeanor of the fourth degree, after she was found hiding inside a vacant residence July 24 in the 100 block of W. Pleasant Street in Mount Vernon.
Shafer was arrested and handcuffed with her hands behind her back and placed into the back of the police cruiser where the windows were down three to four inches. Without the law enforcement officers noticing, Shafer escaped the cuffs and the car and ran off.
She was caught immediately and charged with escape, a felony of the fifth degree, and petty theft - of the police handcuffs - a misdemeanor of first degree.

Paul Scott, Jr., 23, Mount Vernon, was indicted on aggravated possession of drugs and illegal possession of a deadly weapon or dangerous ordinance in a school safety zone, both fifth-degree felonies, and having weapons under disability, a felony of the third degree. Counts one and three have a forfeiture specification of a firearm.
Shade A. Knox, 20, Mount Vernon, was indicted on charges of complicity in the commission of a theft and possession of cocaine, felonies of the fifth degree, and possessing drug abuse instruments, a misdemeanor of the second degree. He also has a forfeiture specification of $236 that was allegedly acquired in the commission of the felony.
Dana G. Menke, 19, and Audrianna S. Clupper, 23, both from Mount Vernon, were indicted on one charge of theft each, both felonies of the fifth degree. They are both named in the same incident involving the same amount of money.
William Estes, 44, Ravenna, was indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony.
Brittany L. Wheeler, 28, Mount Vernon, was charged with four fifth-degree felonies; two of theft, one of forgery and of identity theft, all of which involved the same person.
Donald R. Kennedy, Jr., 25, Howard, was indicted on one count of aggravated possession of meth, a fifth-degree felony.
Hunter L. Phillips. 25, Mount Vernon, was indicted on two counts of possession of heroin, one of which was a second-degree felony, because it was a bulk amount of 14.98 grams, and one a fifth-degree felony.
Joseph R.W. Heins, II, 19, was indicted on two counts of trafficking - one of meth, a second-degree felony, and one of heroin, a felony of the fifth degree. He also has a forfeiture specification of cash.
Elizabeth A. Mills, 34, Gahanna, was indicted on two fifth-degree felony drug charges; one of aggravated possession of drugs (meth) and one of possession of drugs (Xanax).
Torri M. Smith, 25, Mount Vernon, was indicted on count of possession of a fentanyl-related compound, a felony of the fifth degree.
Samuel L. Shaffer, 27, was indicted on a charge of aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony.
Thomas H. Perrine, 56, Bladensburg, was indicted on one count of aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony.
Jeffrey L. Moore, 56, Mount Vernon, was indicted on a felony charge of aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, and possession of drug abuse instruments, a misdemeanor of the second degree.
Melvin Montgomery, 38, Albany, Louisiana, was charged with receiving stolen property, a fifth-degree felony, and obstructing official business, a second degree misdemeanor.
