Harold W. ‘Jake’ Dowden

CENTERBURG — Harold W. “Jake” Dowden, 95, of Centerburg passed away Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Brookdale in Mount Vernon. He was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Mount Liberty to the late Theodore and Maud (Slane) Dowden.
Jake honorably served his country in the Army during World War II. He was a Millwright for the former Continental Can in Mount Vernon. Jake and his wife, Mary, were members of Mount Liberty United Methodist. He enjoyed farming his 70-acre farm which was one mile from his birth place. Jake was known for the beautiful cabinets, tables and shelves he made over the years. He was a member of the AmVets, the V.F.W., the Moose Lodge and the Masonic Lodge.
Jake is survived by his wife, Mary B. (Mitchell) Dowden whom he married on Sept. 15, 1951; daughter, Rebecca (Gregory Clossman) Dowden of Centerburg; grandchildren, Magdalene Fay (Adam) Holt and Elisha Dowden; great-grandchildren, Tyler Stinson and Jayla Wood; and sister, Bonnie Parnell of Mount Vernon.
In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by a son, Tim Dowden; brother, Herbert Dowden; and sisters, Helen White, Ruth Hulse and Josephine Workman.
The family will receive friends from noon until the time of a funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, with Rev. Thom Fowler officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. A Masonic memorial service will begin the funeral service.
