Stage set for state bowling

COLUMBUS — The Mount Vernon News coverage area will be well represented at this weekend’s Division II State Bowling Tournament set for Friday and Saturday.
The girls state qualifiers will take the lanes Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl, while the boys compete at the same location Saturday. Both days, qualifying rounds begin at 10:30 a.m. and the three, 10-frame games will run into the afternoon. At around 3:15 p.m., there will be an individual award ceremony. In the team race, the top eight teams will be seeded into a bracket and will compete head-to-head in a best-of-five Baker game set to advance in the bracket for the team title, and those rounds start at 3:45 p.m.
Cardington and Highland girls’ teams finished second and third, respectively, at the district tournament, so both teams will be vying at the state tournament Friday. Utica’s Courtney Melvin and Fredericktown’s Hannah Vaughn will both be bowling as indivuduals.
Highland also qualified in the boys ranks as a team, so the Scots will combine for 15 games Saturday. Centerburg’s Cody Climer will compete as an individual.
