Knox County Compost Facility | Knox County Recycling & Litter Prevention

Knox County residents have two opportunities this month to take part in free community events that promote sustainability, security, and convenience.

On Saturday, May 16, and Saturday, May 23, from 8:00 a.m. to noon, Knox County Recycling & Litter Prevention will host Scooper Saturdays at the Compost Facility, 7425 Thayer Road in Mount Vernon. The Green Machine will be on‑site with loading equipment to scoop mulch directly into vehicles. Anyone who can haul material is welcome to line up along Thayer Road, where crews will handle the loading. The event is open to everyone, making it easy for residents to stock up on ground material for gardens, landscaping, or other outdoor projects.

Also on Saturday, May 16, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., residents can take advantage of Community Shred Day at the Knox County Service Center parking lot, 113 E. Chestnut Street in Mount Vernon. A shredding truck will be available to securely destroy up to five boxes of personal documents per participant. Staples and paper clips may remain on documents, but large binder clips and three‑ring binders must be removed. Wet or moldy paper will not be accepted, and the service is not intended for businesses. The event may end earlier if the truck fills up. This free service is provided by CES Credit Union in partnership with Knox County Recycling & Litter Prevention.

Both events highlight Knox County’s commitment to serving residents with practical, eco‑friendly solutions. Scooper Saturdays encourage recycling and reuse of natural materials while providing a valuable resource for home projects. Community Shred Day helps protect against identity theft by ensuring sensitive documents are destroyed securely, while also supporting paper recycling efforts.

For those unable to attend Scooper Saturdays, the Compost Facility remains open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., allowing residents to scoop their own mulch at no cost. Meanwhile, Shred Day offers a one‑time opportunity to clear out old files safely and conveniently.

These initiatives demonstrate Knox County Recycling & Litter Prevention’s mission to promote sustainability, protect residents, and provide accessible services. For more information, call (740) 393‑6704 during business hours. Whether hauling mulch or shredding documents, residents can take part in these programs to improve their homes, safeguard personal information, and support community recycling efforts.
