The Utica varsity cross country team traveled to Virginia to compete in the RVA Relays, an event that stands out because relays are not common in cross country.
The meet was hosted by Hanover in Mechanicsville at Pole Green Park. Utica brought its top six boys and top six girls, though only five of each raced. The sixth runners were brought in case of injury but still had the chance to compete in the open race.
The boys placed 51st overall, finishing ahead of 106 teams. The girls finished 62nd, besting 61 teams.
“I’m proud to say our athletes represented Ohio incredibly well at one of the largest and most competitive meets Virginia has to offer,” coach Preston Johnston said. “Beyond the strong performances, the weekend was full of energy, teamwork and memories we’ll carry with us for a long time.”
The boys relay team featured senior Hayden Quinif, juniors Andrew Bebout and Holden Quinif, and sophomores Blake Lewis and Sam Krueger. The girls team included senior Camryn Baker, junior Kaylee Linger, and freshmen Shay Firman, Addy Baird and Haddie Glover.
For Utica, the RVA Relays marked one of the largest stages of the season, making their performance all the more impressive.
