The Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau has announced the launch of the first-ever Knox County Biketoberfest. This event, organized by Outdoor Pursuits, a non-profit based in Columbus, will take place at Ariel-Foundation Park from October 3rd to 5th. The festival invites cyclists and trail users of all skill levels to enjoy a weekend focused on cycling and community amidst Knox County's fall scenery.
Outdoor Pursuits, established in 1937, is known for organizing large-scale bicycle tours across Ohio. Jeff Stephens, Executive Director of Outdoor Pursuits, expressed enthusiasm about the new event: "The opportunities we’ve created for cyclists to tour and explore all of Ohio is such an exciting part of our work," he said. He noted that many cyclists have enjoyed riding in Knox County for years and are eager for this significant event.
Knox County Biketoberfest aims to support the Outdoor Pursuits Bicycle Development Fund, which has invested over $1 million in bicycle infrastructure and advocacy throughout Ohio. The event offers various cycling options suitable for families and experienced riders alike. Participants can choose from traditional road routes or scenic rides along trails like the Ohio to Erie Trail, Kokosing Gap Trail, and Heart of Ohio Trail. For seasoned cyclists, challenging routes such as the Knox County Bicycle Challenge through Amish country are available.
The festival also includes two memorial rides. One ride honors James "Jim" P. Buchwald, a notable inventor and community figure from Knox County. Tom Bilcze, President of the Ohio to Erie Trail and a native of Knox County, remarked on Buchwald's legacy: "Choosing to honor Jim during this event felt right," he said.
In addition to cycling activities, Downtown Mount Vernon will host other events like the Johnny Appleseed Fall Festival on Friday night and the Knox Foodies Food Truck Festival on Sunday afternoon.
Olivia Toth from the Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau commented on the festival's impact: "We are incredibly excited to welcome this new festival to our community," she said.
