Mount Vernon Nazarene University has appointed Michael Black as its new Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, effective July 1. Black, an alumnus from the class of 1995, brings over 25 years of experience in financial planning and business operations to the role.
Black has been working as a Financial Planner and Regional Director at Money Concepts Wealth Management & Financial Planning. He also owns Black and Co. Employee Benefits Advisors, focusing on employee benefits and risk management. His previous roles at MVNU include positions in the admissions office and as a financial planning counselor.
Reflecting on his return to MVNU, Black said, "Over 25 years ago, I left MVNU with a deep sense of gratitude and purpose... From that moment, I carried a desire to one day return and give back." He expressed confidence that his experience will help guide MVNU into a stronger future.
Black holds an MBA from Ashland University and is licensed in various insurance areas. He also holds Series 7 and Series 65 certifications.
MVNU President Dr. Carson Castleman expressed enthusiasm about Black's appointment: "We are excited to welcome Michael Black... Michael brings a wealth of expertise in finance." Castleman highlighted Black’s commitment to MVNU as both an alumnus and former staff member.
As CFO, Black will join the President’s Cabinet, overseeing financial strategy, budget planning, financial reporting, endowment management, facilities planning, insurance management, and more. His vision for MVNU includes focusing on financial sustainability, mission-aligned innovation, and maximizing student value.
"I share a vision with current leadership to boldly embrace our Christian identity," said Black. He aims to align financial decisions with the university's Christ-centered mission while supporting faculty and empowering students.
