As the weather warms up and spring approaches, enthusiasts of side-by-sides and ATVs are gearing up for another season of adventure.
Paul Staats, founder and owner of Valley ATV, is a passionate advocate for these outdoor activities, particularly for families looking to enjoy quality time together.
“I like the side-by-sides because you can have anywhere from two to six people depending on the model," Staats told the Mount Vernon News. "We had a great ride down in West Virginia between Christmas and New Year’s with 23 machines, many of them from families. Some had never ridden before, but they had a fantastic time. One guy said, 'I’m doing this because I can get my kids off the computer.’”
Staats adds that these vehicles are a great way to get kids outdoors, noting that it brings families together for fun and adventure.
The side-by-side machines come in various models suited to different types of riders. "The Razors and Mavericks are more sporty,” Staats said. “That’s when you can go out and do something crazy and have a good time."
These vehicles are ideal for those looking for a thrill, but Staats also highlights the versatility of other models.
“The Polaris Expedition has an enclosed cabin with a heater and air conditioning, perfect for rainy rides,” he said. "We were down there during a rainy day, and we didn’t mind. It felt like riding in a Jeep."
For those with a more utilitarian need, Staats notes that the Rangers and Defenders, equipped with dump beds, are great for farmers or anyone needing practical vehicles for hauling.
He also mentions the benefits of ATVs, which are smaller, easily transportable and don’t require a trailer for hauling.
For Staats, riding isn’t just about the machines—it's about the people.
"One guy recently said, ‘I enjoy the ride, but I also enjoy the people I’m riding with. The camaraderie, everybody there with the same interests,’” Staats said. “It’s a great way to de-stress, especially for families and friends.”
When it comes to where to ride, Staats points to various options across the region.
“In Ohio, places like Prairie State Forest have a 62-inch width limit, but a lot of people head to West Virginia, Kentucky, or Tennessee for more options,” he said.
Staats' business organizes trips to these areas, with upcoming rides scheduled for March 7 and April 25.
“These trips help generate interest and let people experience these machines first-hand. Anybody can join, you don’t have to buy it here, but hopefully, next time you will,” Staats said.
