Several students recently experienced the world of business firsthand at JA BizTown, an immersive learning program designed to teach young students about finance, entrepreneurship, and teamwork.
Operated by Junior Achievement of Central Ohio, JA BizTown is located at 1440 Granville Road in Newark and serves middle school students through hands-on lessons in business operations and financial decision-making.
During their visit, students assumed various adult roles, taking on real-world responsibilities. Liam Clanin, acting as CEO of Meta, worked on securing a bank loan and drafting a speech for the town hall meeting—skills essential for future success. Hadley McInturff, an ad executive with Google, discussed city finances with Alivia Fulk, the City Treasurer, demonstrating the interconnectedness of business and government.
Other students filled key roles in local businesses. Peyton Collura worked the McDonald’s register, processing customer transactions, while Bentleigh Wilson, CFO of Huntington Bank, reviewed loan payments and managed company finances. These experiences reinforced lessons in financial responsibility and economic impact.
JA BizTown combines classroom instruction with a hands-on, day-long visit to a simulated town, where students can take on leadership roles, manage businesses, operate banks, and even vote for a mayor. The program helps students understand how their choices affect the economy while developing critical thinking and collaboration skills.
Alongside JA Finance Park, JA BizTown introduces students to concepts like budgeting, economic decision-making, and teamwork, fostering early financial literacy. The program also emphasizes career readiness by exposing students to potential future professions in business, government, and finance.
Aligned with national and state standards in reading, math, social studies, and career preparation, JA BizTown also offers Spanish translation, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
Through this immersive experience, students gain practical skills that will benefit them well into adulthood.
