The United Way of Knox County wants to make life a little easier for residents by doing the heavy lifting this tax season.
Free tax preparation assistance is available at United Way of Knox County, Feb. 3 through April 10, through the financial stability initiative and in partnership with the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or VITA program.
"Our staff and volunteers are trained about tax credits and updates that might put money back in your pocket, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Care Tax Credit," said Isabel McDonald, communications assistant, United Way of Knox County Ohio, Inc.
Tax credits, like the EITC, were designed to help individuals and families with low-to-moderate income keep more of what they earned.
"Our staff can help you determine whether or not you qualify," McDonald said.
This service is for Knox County residents with low-to-moderate income as defined by the IRS: an adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less per year for single filers and $95,000 or less for married couples with dependents.
Once again, the program will only offer scheduled curbside appointments in which taxpayers remain in their vehicle throughout the duration of their appointment. No drop-in appointments will be accepted.
To set up a curbside appointment, call: 740.397.5721, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
United Way, located on 305 East High Street in Mount Vernon, also offers limited evening and Saturday appointments on a first call, first served basis. Tax parking is available behind the United Way office.
Taxpayers are responsible for providing United Way staff members with all necessary and accurate tax documents. A complete list will be provided when an appointment is scheduled.
According to McDonald, individual refunds will vary.
