Cally Carpenter was one of the top girls’ basketball players in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference last year, and the junior Freddie was hot right out of the gate to be named Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.
Carpenter led the Fredericktown girls’ basketball team to a 51-37 win on opening night over Highland, playing 29 minutes and scoring 25 points in a 10-for-13 shooting night. This included going 3-or-5 from three point land while also going 2-for-3 on free throws. She was also a force defensively with four steals, and a tallied five rebounds (three offensive and two defensive) and an assist.
“I thought Cally played a great game on both sides of the ball,” said Coach Jason Pryor. “She forced turnovers on the defensive side, and ran the offense well. She's been a great leader for us so far and we're lucky to have her.”
Carpenter also received praise from the opposing coach in the game, with Highland Coach Matt Bradley saying, “Cally Carpenter is as good a guard there is in the area.”
Last year Carpenter was first team All-KMAC and was first in KMAC in scoring with 15.1 points per game, and second with 2.8 assists in her sophomore season. If this is any indication of things to come, the conference better look out for Carpenter with another year of experience under her belt.
Congratulations Cally and good luck the rest of the season!
