Mount Vernon residents can expect citywide leaf pickup to begin on Monday, Oct. 30. According to a news release from Darren Tyson, assistant director of Public Works, three machines will be in operation to collect the leaves.
Leaf pickup will commence on main streets first and then move on to side streets and outlying areas. The city plans to make two complete passes throughout November.
It is important for residents to rake their leaves to the curb, but not into the street. Raking leaves into the street can lead to clogged storm sewers. Additionally, leaves should not be piled around trees, fire hydrants, sign posts, mailboxes, or close to intersections.
For those who prefer to dispose of their leaves themselves, the Knox County Yard Waste and Compost Facility is available. The facility, located at 7425 Thayer Road in Mount Vernon, is open seven days a week. However, residents must remove bags or other containers holding leaves from the facility after emptying them.
With the citywide leaf pickup beginning on Oct. 30, Mount Vernon residents are encouraged to prepare their leaves for collection and follow the guidelines provided by the Public Works department.
