Danville stays undefeated with 53-20 win over Mount Gilead

Walker Weckesser led Danville (9-0, 6-0) to another big win to stay undefeated, throwing for three touchdowns in a 53-20 win over KMAC rival Mount Gilead (2-7, 0-6) on Friday night.

The Indians got on the board first with a field goal to take a 3-0 lead, but that would be the only time Danville would trail in the game. They lead 8-3 after one quarter, and then 16-6 at halftime. The Blue Devils outscored the Indians 22-7 in the third quarter and finished off strong with a 15-7 advantage to take the 23 point conference victory at home for their ninth straight win.

Weckesser was 15-for-24 for 282 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He had three carries for 19 yards. On defense he had an interception that he returned for 49 yards, and five tackles.

Weckesser’s top target was Nate Stephens, with four catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. 

Bryer Boeshart was the top ball carrier of the day with six carries for 109 yards and two scores, including one going for 85 yards. Boeshart had 11 tackles with one for a loss, and one sack.

Cole Delaughder had 47 yards rushing and now has 1,086 on the season to lead the conference. He also scored a touchdown and leads the KMAC with 18 scores on the season. He had two catches for 55 yards with one going for a touchdown in the win.

Nate Stephens scored a touchdown and had 22 yards on three carries. Joshua Byers had a pair of catches for 39 yards and a touchdown. He was especially effective on defense with 21 total tackles, and three going for a loss. Byers also blocked a field goal in the game.

Caleb Lucas had 13 tackles with one for a loss, and Wesley Payne recovered a fumble.

Mount Gilead was led by Cole Fricke, who was 9-for-12 for 115 yards, two passing touchdowns and an interception.

Danville hosts East Knox on Friday night at 7 p.m. in a battle between two of the top teams in KMAC. Mount Gilead looks to halt their losing streak in the final game of the season against Cardington-Lincoln at 7 p.m. on the road.
