OXFORD – Three of Miami University's Fulbright semifinalists have been offered 2023-2024 grants and two have been named alternates.

Fulbright, the largest U.S. exchange program, provides grants for individually designed study/research projects for English teaching assistant programs outside of the United States. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and/or professional achievement, and record of service.

Since 2000, more than 80 Miami students and alumni, not including these latest offers, have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants to conduct research or teach overseas, according to Karla Guinigundo, director of global partnerships in Miami's Office of Global Initiatives.

"Recent global events have underscored the critical importance of the Fulbright Program's mission to build intercultural bridges and increase mutual understanding across borders," Guinigundo said. "It is exciting to see these talented Miami University students and alumni become a part of this flagship international exchange program."

This year, Miami had 15 applicants from 11 countries. Of these, six were undergraduate students, three were graduate students and six were alumni. Two applied for graduate study or research grants; 13 applied for English teaching assistantships.

This year's Fulbright awardees include:

Howard – Erin Fetters, English teaching assistant in Colombia, majors: Spanish (MA) and Latin American studies

During this cycle, more than 8,000 applications were submitted throughout the United States. Fulbright alumni include leaders who are making a difference in their communities and the world, including 61 Nobel Prize laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize recipients and 40 who have served as a head of state or government.
