In honor of National Doctors Day on March 30, Knox Community Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Hall spoke with the Mount Vernon News about the importance of the doctors and hospital staff in a small community.
The community relies heavily on KCH physicians and their expertise in primary care as well as multiple specialties, including hip and knee replacement, obstetrics/gynecology, cardiovascular care, cancer treatment, pain management and much more.
“Our doctors across the county have a very broad responsibility for a large number of patients with diverse medical needs,” he said. “They are ideally positioned to deliver a broad spectrum of care and help patients receive well-rounded care directly in their own community.”
Hall highlighted family practice regarding the versatility within the cases while treating multiple age-ranges. This allows these doctors to use an impressive amount of knowledge in multiple fields without referring patients.
Hall discussed the importance of primary care specialists, specializing in internal medicine, family practice and pediatrics. He praised their work and the expertise they bring to the field.
“These individuals are some of the smartest and bravest people on the planet because they rise to meet new challenges every day,” Hall said. “They serve a high volume of patients who deserve high quality care. Our doctors are approachable and address multiple needs while caring for the whole person.”
Although National Doctors Day recognizes physicians (both general practice and specialists), Hall pointed out the value of nurse practitioners as well. There are differences between their training; however, quality of care and approach to patient care mirror each other. The key is to have a primary care provider you trust to care for you and to refer you to a specialist as needed. Physicians and nurse practitioners can do this.
Hall spoke about the importance of being an active patient. Keeping appointments, not delaying procedures, adhering to medical advice and keeping updated records of medication and doses allows patients to remain active and involved with their care as well as the physicians.
Hall also points out the advantages of being a partner in your personal healthcare journey. Being comfortable to ask questions, watching for symptoms and engaging in conversation allows for physicians to execute care plans to their best ability. Investing in your healthcare journey allows for trust to be built within the physician-patient dynamic.
