There is still time to order one of the festive holiday pies prepared the Amish way from Newcastle Farmhaus.
Owner Emma Keen told the Mount Vernon News that while the restaurant will close Thursday, Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. for dine-in and carryout customers, pie orders are still accepted through noon on Monday, Dec. 20.
Fruit and nut pies – pecan, pumpkin, crumb-topped apple – are on sale for $15 each. Other pies (including chocolate, chocolate/peanut butter, peanut butter pudding, banana cream and coconut cream) can be purchased for $14. Cheesecake is also offered.
"Everything is homemade, made from scratch here," Keen said. "We don't even have instant mashed potatoes in the house. We pretty much make everything like my Amish grandmother made it."
The restaurant, located in Amish country at 32381 U.S. Highway 36 in Walhonding, will reopen Jan. 6 after a two-week holiday break.
The restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, is normally closed every Tuesday and opens all other weekdays.
Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, closing at 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
Sunday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Dinner specials include meatloaf on Mondays, cheesy potatoes on Wednesdays, pulled pork tacos on Thursdays, fish on Fridays and chicken wings on Saturdays. On Sundays, diners can choose from among beef and noodles over mashed potatoes, ham loaf, and chicken or shrimp Alfredo.
"This is a great place to eat located out in the country very quiet and it’s great food and all the pies are made by the Amish," a reviewer said on Facebook.
"The homemade pies are almost as good as my mother's," another reviewer wrote.
