NEWARK – The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology (The Works) recently announced the naming of its art gallery to the Marcia W. Downes Art Gallery. The new title was announced on Oct. 2 during The Works’ biennial fundraising event. Over 250 guests joined the museum to celebrate The Works' 25th anniversary and the retirement of Downes, who led The Works for over 20 years.
“We knew we wanted to do something really special to commemorate Marcia’s innovative and dedicated leadership over the years,” said Janice LoRaso, incoming executive director. “Works founder Howard LeFevre felt strongly that the arts be an integral part of The Works. Marcia has ensured this vision continued. We are proud to honor her own artful legacy with this new gallery name.”
Marcia began working in close partnership with LeFevre in the late 1990s, bringing to life his vision to establish an interactive learning center on the site of an 1800s Newark, Ohio, industrial space. In addition to the gallery naming, in honor of her service to The Works and the community for over 20 years, a fund has been established in Downes’ name.
The Marcia W. Downes Future Exhibits Fund will be used at the discretion of the Executive Director to continue to deliver on The Works’ vision to serve as:
- A center of inspiration and creativity for curious learners of all ages;
- An energetic indispensable educational and cultural resource;
- A catalyst for connection and positive change in our community.
