MOUNT VERNON – The 19th Amendment, granting women’s suffrage, was certified just over a century ago on August 26, 1920. The Knox County Democratic Women (KCDW) are inviting the community to their Women’s Equality Day to commemorate and celebrate a woman’s right to vote.
KCDW’s event will be held Thursday, Aug. 26, from 6 to 7 p.m. on the Mount Vernon Square. This year’s focus is on family and community health and safety. KCDW’s dynamic line-up of speakers includes:
· Julia Warga, Mount Vernon City Council member and at-large candidate
· Mary Chapa, KCDW president, Knox County Board of Elections member
· Kelly Brenneman, executive director, United Way of Knox County
· Emily Morrison, member of the Mental Health and Recovery Board for Licking and Knox counties, member Knox County Suicide Prevention Coalition
· Peg Tazewell, executive director, Knox County Head Start
· Natalie Sekavec, activist, daughter of Knox County Children and Family Services Director Matthew Kurtz
Sekavec and friends will help end the evening with some musical entertainment, along with Tao Bridge, a musical duo composed of husband-and-wife team Brian and Jackie Moore.
The Knox County Democratic Women’s mission is to identify, recruit and train women to hold positions of leadership in the government and community at all levels. KCDW also seeks to provide public forums on issues, legislation and political candidates; support the principles of the Democratic Party; work for the election of Democratic candidates; and promote the health and welfare of women.
KCDW meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. To join KCDW or find out more information about the organization, contact Mary Chapa at marychapa.knox@gmail.com or search “Knox County Democratic Women” on Facebook to visit the group’s page.
