DANVILLE – The 2021 Danville Lions Club Raccoon Dinner will be held on Monday, May 3, at the St. Luke's Community Center, located immediately behind the Danville St. Luke's Catholic Church.

Serving will start at 4:30 p.m. and continue until gone on a first come, first served basis (300 meals will be prepared). This will be a carryout meal featuring raccoon, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, green beans and a cookie. For those who travel from far away, limited seating is available approximately two blocks away at the Knights of Columbus building. Meal pickup is at St. Luke's Center.

Proceeds will be used to assist the Doug Neely family.

Doug Neely, 56, was diagnosed with duodenal cancer in 2016. After surgery, he was cancer-free until April 2020. The cancer came back. In June 2020, he had the lower right lobe of his lungs removed along with lymph nodes. In March 2021, the cancer returned again.

Doug is traveling to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Newnan, Georgia, every other week for chemotherapy. He has worked in the health care field for the last 25 years. Doug's wife has had to reduce her work to support him in his medical and physical needs. This family needs our help and support.

Meals cost $13. If you cannot attend, you can contribute to this worthy cause. Donations for the Doug Neely Fund are appreciated. Make checks payable to the Danville Lions Club with a note in the comment area, "Doug Neely Fund," and send to P.O. Box 506, Danville, OH 43014. Or, you can make a donation on the GoFundMe page, "Doug Neely Family Cancer Treatment."

Clyde Banbury and Clyde Cornell started the first Raccoon Dinner. The meal was served in Banbury's basement with 30 in attendance. After a few years, the annual dinner was moved to the elementary building at the school cafeteria since the interest in attending was dramatically increasing.

The 82-year-old Danville Lions Club, chartered in 1939, was sponsored jointly by the Fredericktown and Mount Vernon Lions Clubs. Since the beginning, the Club has truly lived up to the Lions' motto, "We Serve." They have sponsored and facilitated many hundreds of fundraising events and service projects to help the Danville area community and its citizens.
