Softball roundup: Melick, Bailey go deep in Bulldogs' first wins

East Knox came back from a 10-day layoff to take two of three in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play for its first wins of the season.

The Bulldogs capped the weekend by putting a five-spot on the board in the second inning before holding off host Centerburg 9-6.

Shanda Melick and Cami Bailey capped the big frame with back-to-back home runs. Melick’s was a two-run blast. Bailey was also solid in the circle, allowing one earned run in a complete game.

Amelia Smith homered for the Trojans, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

It was a nice bounce back for the Bulldogs, who were coming off a 25-6 loss to Northmor in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17, in Galion.

Maddie Hoverland went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and four runs and tossed a complete game in the circle to lead the Golden Knights.

In the opener, East Knox used an eight-run fifth inning to beat Northmor 8-3 for its first win of the year.

Melick hit a two-run homer and Bailey hit a solo shot immediately after to mirror Monday’s action.

Trojans take two at Grandview

Centerburg scored 10 runs in the first inning to roll to a 19-5 win in five innings in the first game, and they closed the day with a nine-run fifth inning to win the second game 13-0 at Grandview Heights in non-league play on Saturday, April 17.

Allie Beekman had three hits, three runs and three RBIs to lead the way.

In the second game, Rylee Bryant drove in four runs on two hits and scored twice, and Shelby Morris allowed two hits over four innings to lead the Trojans.

Kaitlyn Tenzos drove in five runs to lead the host Trojans to a win over Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Friday, April 16.

Morris allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts over five innings to pick up the win for Centerburg.

Devils cap weekend with walk-off

Keura Schilling hit a one-out single in the ninth inning and came around to score on an error, lifting host Danville to a 5-4 win over Fredericktown in KMAC play on Monday, April 19.

Shilling had three hits and Maddy Wine went the distance to get the win for the Blue Devils.

Grace Gronberg tossed a complete game to help the Blue Devils earn a split of a doubleheader with a 7-2 win at Tuscarawas Central Catholic in non-league play on Saturday, April 17, in New Philadelphia.

Wine hit an RBI double in the third inning to give Danville the lead for good.

Schilling worked three of Danville’s nine walks in the second game, but Sophia Knight kept the Devils at bay with a complete-game victory in a 10-3 win for the Saints to open the day. She struck out 12 batters and allowed two hits.

Scots take three of four

Brooklyn Croy homered, doubled and drove in four runs to lead Highland to 21-2 victory at Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Monday, April 19, to cap a busy weekend.

Faith Geiger and Emma West each drove in three runs for the Scots.

West made it all worth it with a two-run double in the ninth inning to send Highland to a 2-0 win over Big Walnut in a non-league doubleheader opener on Saturday, April 17, in Sunbury.

Stevie Asher made it stand by finishing off the Golden Eagles in a complete-game effort. Asher allowed just three hits and struck out 12.

The Eagles responded with some late-game heroics of their own, battling back from a four-run deficit with five runs in the seventh inning.

Allyson Truax drove in two runs on a single, then scored the game-winner on an Audrey Justice groundout for Big Walnut.

Sydney Sansom, Alyssa Perkins and Hannah LeFevre each had RBI hits as the Freddies built a 5-0 lead before holding off the Panthers for a non-league win on Saturday, April 17, in Newark.

Perkins and Lainey Partington each had three hits and scored a run and Miranda Payne tossed the final 4 2/3 innings to hold off Licking Valley.

Geiger’s two-run single in the first turned out to be all the runs the Scots needed in an 8-1 KMAC victory at Fredericktown on Friday, April 16.

Highland put up a five-spot in the fifth inning to blow the game open, and Stevie Asher struck out five and allowed one earned run to notch the win.

Jackets cap weekend with big win over Eagles

Brooke Radermacher drove in seven runs to lead Mount Vernon to a 28-1 win in five innings over visiting New Albany on Monday, April 19.

Radermacher, Layne Cook and Kelly Sullins each homered for the Yellow Jackets, who blew it open with 14 runs in the second inning.

Makaylia Schlosser scored three runs to help the Yellow Jackets salvage a split of two games with a 6-3 win over Groveport-Madison in five innings in Lancaster’s 20-team showcase on Saturday, April 17, at Marten’s Park.

Schlosser and Mollie Pentz each had three hits for Mount Vernon, which trailed 3-1 after the Cruisers scored two in the top of the fourth. Pentz also scored three runs and Rhyli Pope went the distance for the Jackets in the win.

Pentz hit a two-run single to give Mount Vernon a 6-0 lead over North Union in the opener, but the Wildcats rallied back to send it to extra innings before winning 7-6 on a walk-off single by Reagan Martino in the eighth.

Utica stumbles in LCL play

Johnstown’s Julia Montie hit a two-run triple and Macy Walters followed with a three-run homer during a six-run second inning. The host Johnnies rolled to a 12-2 win in five innings over Utica in Licking County League play on Monday, April 19.

Cass Fouty had two hits, an RBI and a run to pace Utica.

Mackenzie Woodruff drove in two runs in the first inning to stake Utica to a 3-1 lead. Makayla Jardine led the visiting Bulldogs back by hitting a game-tying solo home run in fourth inning. She singled to lead off the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball later in the inning to help Heath notch the LCL win.
