Dear Editor:
MOUNT VERNON – In a recent missive from Jill Grubb of the People's Republic of Gambier, she said the following:
"Every time voting rights are expanded, Republicans have found ways, not noble ones, to curtail those rights: poll taxes, lynching, in early days the beating and threatening of minorities, Jim Crow laws, the jailing of African Americans for minor infringements so they'll lose their voting rights, the moving of dates and polling places, purging and the spreading of misinformation about the safety of voting by mail."
Perhaps Ms. Grubb was asleep during history class because all of the activities she described above were those undertaken by members of the Democrat Party. Those facts are undisputable.
Republicans freed African Americans from slavery, passed the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the federal Constitution, and enacted the first Civil Rights Act in 1876. Poll taxes, lynching, Jim Crow laws and everything else she describes were all the work of the Democrat Party and their military wing, the Ku Klux Klan.
As a liberal Democrat, Ms. Grubb has every right to be ashamed of her party’s history. She doesn’t, however, have the right to deny and disregard its history.
