Carlton C. Riley

February 27, 1933-September 7, 2020

UTICA – A memorial service for Carlton C. Riley, 87, of Utica will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2020 at the Utica United Methodist Church, 626 North St., Utica with Pastor Jason Snyder officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Riley passed away on September 7, 2020 at his residence. He was born on February 27, 1933 in Newark to the late Harold V. and Mary P. (Jagger) Riley.

Carlton was a member of the Utica United Methodist Church, National Rural Letter Carriers Association, Utica Historical Society and Sertoma and lifetime member of the American Legion Post #92 and NRA. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a volunteer for the blood mobile, former Utica Council Member and served on the Boy Scouts Board. 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis (Salyers) Riley; son, Michael Riley; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and David Boggs; grandchildren, Austin (Emilie) Boggs, Levi (Mallorie) Boggs and Ellie Boggs; great-granddaughter, Grace Boggs; sister, Claire Ann Krieder; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Carl Riley.

Shane Nye

Shane David Nye, 38, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, August 26, 2020.  Shane was born May 16, 1982 the son of David and Sharon (DeMatteis) Nye.

Shane grew up in Hilliard Ohio where he graduated from Hilliard Davidson High School.  During and after college he worked at Teleperformance for 10 years as the Assistant Center Manager and for the last 7 years he was employed with Verizon as a Business and Government Coordinator. Shane will be affectionately remembered for his love of family, big warm hugs, dry sense of humor, infectious smile, and his love for his cat Lisa as well as all animals. Shane spent his free time enjoying music, cooking, target shooting with his dad, and he loved traveling with his wife Stephanie, especially to Las Vegas.   He was a huge Buckeye fan and he was always playing practical jokes on family and friends which either made you laugh or promised awful paybacks.

Shane will be deeply missed by his wife Stephanie (Newcomer) Nye, step-son Quintin Frey, parents David and Sharon, In Laws Don and Melanie Newcomer, the entire Nye and DeMatteis  families and many friends who all loved him. He is preceded in death by grandparents Francis and Theresa DeMatteis, Clarence and Therese Nye, Uncles Robin Nye and Dan DeMatteis.

Due to COVID restrictions, there will be A Celebration of Shane’s Life at a later date.  Friends may contribute to the Capital Area Humane Society 3015 Scioto Darby Executive Court Hilliard OH 43026 in Shane’s memory.

Harold Hedrick

Harold L. Hedrick, age 67, of Galion passed away on Monday, September 7, 2020 at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus.  The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Harold L. Hedrick.

Lyle E. Dewitt

April 21, 1938-August 28, 2020

A private graveside service for Lyle E. Dewitt, 82, of Utica was held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Owl Creek Cemetery.

Lyle passed away on August 28, 2020 at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 21, 1938 in Delaware to the late Earl and Ada (Houston) Dewitt.

Lyle was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Mount. Vernon. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from Sprint Telephone after 35 years. Throughout his career, he loved his work and provided services to others. He was owner and operator of L&M Antenna, and also a small lawn service.  He ran a TV repair center in the 70’s, and also enjoyed carpentry work and working around the house.

He is survived by his sons, Andrew Dewitt and Terry Dewitt; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Frances Marie (Carnes) Dewitt; and brothers and sisters.

Daniel "Dann" Beaver

MOUNT VERNON  – Daniel D. Beaver, 69, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on October 21, 1950 in Mount Vernon, Ohio the son of William Robert and Mildred (Lifer) Beaver.  Dann was a 1968 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and served in the United States Army.  He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Dann purchased Mount Vernon Overhead Door in 1985.  He owned and operated this business until his retirement on September 5, 2020.   Dann was an avid Harley Davidson rider and always looked forward to his Daytona and Venice trip with good friend and cohort Denny “Old Man” Haldeman.  Most important to Dann was his family.  Always known as their biggest fan, he was a devoted and loving, husband, father, and grandfather.  

He is survived by his wife Mary Lynn (Moritz) Beaver, whom he married on September 6, 1974; his sons, Brad Beaver of Mount Vernon and Brett Beaver of Mount Vernon; his daughter, Lisa (Jon) Dix of Winston Salem, North Carolina; grandchildren, Austin Beaver, Adyson Beaver, Lucas Dix, Bristol Dix, Axl Dix; a sister, Karen (Rick) Crothers of Newark and his canine companion Annie.

Dann was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.   A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 303 E. High Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 with Celebrant Rev. Father Daniel Olvera.  A graveside service with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.  

Memorial contributions in Dann’s name may be made to Hospice of Knox County.
