Mount Vernon woman indicted for attempted murder

MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon woman accused of stabbing her mother-in-law in their North Sandusky Street residence July 17 was indicted by Monday’s Knox County grand jury for attempted murder and felonious assault.

Miranda Woods, 29, was indicted for attempted murder, a first-degree felony, two counts of felonious assault, second-degree felonies, and disrupting public services, a fourth-degree felony.

Woods allegedly told the victim she was going to kill her while stabbing her with a kitchen knife five to six times, including at least one time in the neck near a major artery, according to Prosecuting Attorney Chip McConville.

McConville said that Woods reportedly got into an altercation with her mother-in-law late in the evening over household bills. The victim left the house in an attempt to defuse the situation. When she returned, Woods allegedly attacked her with a blender pitcher, breaking the pitcher over the victim’s head.

Woods then proceeded to stab the victim and smash her phone, telling the victim that she was not going to call anyone, according to McConville.

McConville noted that the smashing of the phone to prevent the victim from calling for help is what led to the disrupting public services charge.

The attempted murder charge relates to the showing of intent to kill. One felonious assault charge references the use of a deadly weapon, the kitchen knife, while the other felonious assault charge references serious physical harm caused by the assault.

The victim was able to break free and drive herself to a friend’s house.

The friend called 911 at approximately 2:15 a.m., reporting that the victim had come to her door with a red stain on her blouse, saying that her daughter-in-law just stabbed her.

Mount Vernon Fire Department medics and Mount Vernon Police Department officers arriving at the scene found the victim lying in her friend’s front yard bleeding from multiple wounds, according to court records.

A search warrant was executed later in the early morning to collect evidence from the North Sandusky Street residence. Evidence collected from the scene included broken glass with a red stain, a collapsible cane and a kitchen knife with a red stain.

Woods was arrested and transported to the Knox County Jail. Knox County Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Wetzel ordered that Woods undergo a competency evaluation. Woods will be held without bond at the jail until the evaluation is complete.

McConville reported that there appeared to be an “uptick of violent offenses” in the past two weeks.

A warrant is out for a Mount Vernon man who has been indicted for the July 11 robbery of Huntington Bank’s Coshocton Avenue location.

Joshua Cron, 31, was identified as the alleged robber by investigation through a photo lineup, interviews with bank employees and information from the public.

Cron allegedly entered the bank and handed the bank teller a note stating that he had a gun and demanded money. Cron was given approximately $1,000 before fleeing the scene in a car driven by an unidentified accomplice, according to McConville.

The robbery was caught on the bank’s security camera. Cron was indicted on aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.

Cron has reportedly left the state since the offense. A nationwide warrant is currently out for his arrest, according to McConville.

A few days later, an unrelated burglary occurred in Fredericktown in which the offender reportedly broke into an acquaintance’s house and assaulted the victim when confronted.

Logan Weaver, 25, homeless, allegedly forced his way into the victim’s apartment by breaking down the door on July 17. He then took energy drinks and bottled water from the victim’s fridge uninvited, according to McConville.

When confronted by the victim, Weaver allegedly assaulted her before fleeing the scene.

McConville explained that the alleged offense amounted to first-degree felony aggravated burglary because the offender not only trespassed, but did so while the victim was present, committed theft while trespassing and also assaulted the victim.

Weaver is not currently in custody. A warrant is issued for his arrest.
