Mary Elizabeth (Gore) Owens

HOWARD — Mary Elizabeth (Gore) Owens, born in Centralia, Illinois, on Aug. 19, 1934, to the late Austin and Hazel Gore. Mary passed on to be with our Lord on Oct. 31, 2019, in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the joyous age of 85. After many years of battling with Lewy Body Dementia, she is now healed in the arms of Jesus.
In 1953, she married Airman Earl Owens. They remained married for almost 55 years before Earl passed away in 2008. Mary (as well as Earl) was a resident of Apple Valley for over 20 years. Much of Mary’s life was focused on raising their four children, serving in the various communities in which they lived, and serving in their churches as choir director, pianist, organist, and church secretary. She was very active in many ways while living in Apple Valley; Apple Core, Annual Easter egg hunt at Floral Valley, craft bazaars over the years, and so much more! Mary left as her legacy a heart of Godly service and hospitality, and a deep love of family. Her days were brightest when helping others. Kind, encouraging, fun-loving, comfort-giving, tireless – all who knew her couldn’t help but be touched. She will be missed.
Mary is survived by her four children, Russell (Sarah) Owens, Ronald (Janice) Owens, Douglas (Mary) Owens and Vickie (Andrew) Cox, plus seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Danville United Methodist Church in Danville on March 7 at 11 a.m. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held following the service at the Apple Valley Clubhouse from 1 to 4 p.m. and is open to all who knew and loved Mary.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, you consider giving to the Lewy Body Dementia Association at LBDA.org and designate your donation as a Tribute Gift in memory of Mary E. Owens.
Submitted by her daughter, Vickie Owens-Cox.
