MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets had another learning experience Tuesday night. The young Jackets’ boy’s varsity soccer team made some strides against the Ashland Arrows, but still fell 3-1 in an Ohio Cardinal Conference match at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
“Our freshmen and sophomores are growing,” said MV coach Scott Dapprich. “It’s fun to watch them grow, but in order to grow sometimes you have to make mistakes to learn. On two of the three goals that took place tonight we had underclassmen on those guys on the other team. If they would have been juniors and seniors with more experience they wouldn’t make the same mistakes that they made tonight.”
The Jackets answered as Wyatt Kirby kicked one in with 30:19 left to go in the first half. The first half of the game was a challenge for the Jackets in terms of Ashland having more shots on goal and better ball possession, but the young Jackets really held their own against the Arrows and the score remained tied at 1-1 until halftime.
But, the Arrows pulled away from the Jackets in the second half with two unanswered goals. The first goal came with 15:23 left in the second half and was kicked by Ashland’s Brian Bostic. The second goal came shortly after. The two goals were the result of an onslaught of offense and shots on goal by the Arrows. The Jackets were able to somewhat stem the tide, but the Arrows pulled out the victory.
Regardless of the 3-1 loss, Dapprich is proud of the progress his young Yellow Jackets are making and is really looking forward to the future of their team.
“I can’t say enough about the learning process and the growing process of those younger guys,” Dapprich said. “I’m pleased with them, but I want them to keep growing. These young players will be great for the future of our team.”
