Driver exam test station to close; state cites cost savings

MOUNT VERNON — The Driver Exam Station at the BMV located on North Sandusky Street in Mount Vernon will be closing at the end of the month.

In an e-mail sent to the News by Lindsey Bohrer, Ohio Department of Public Safety Assistant Director of Communications, the station’s closing is “In an effort to streamline processes, optimize resources, offset costs, and improve customer service.”

This is part of the BMV’s optimization plan that will close 13 “underutilized testing stations that are either part-time or staffed with just a single employee in locations where demand for knowledge and skills tests is very low,” according to the e-mail sent by Bohrer.

Including Mount Vernon, the 13 part-time/single employee stations closing are Bryan, Tiffin, Wapakoneta, Sidney, Marysville, Urbana, Circleville, Ashland, Chardon, Carrolton, Cambridge, and Gallipolis.

This means for Knox County residents the closest skill testing locations will be in Delaware, Mansfield, Newark or Coshocton.

The knowledge tests — the test done for things like a learner’s permit, motorcycle license, and commercial licenses — will be moved to nearby Deputy Registrar agencies.

Skills tests for Knox County residents can still be taken at the BMV location on Sandusky street.

Bohrer said in the e-mail that the staff from the closing driver exam stations will be incorporated into existing stations that were expanded to be open 6 days a week.
