Recognition honors older Ohioans for contributions to others, careers, arts, and more

May is Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate the lifelong contributions of our oldest citizens and their continued value to their communities. It is also a time to thank the legions of area agency on aging and senior center staff, long-term care workers, family caregivers, advocates and volunteers that make up Ohio’s aging network. Severe winter weather can be hard on all of us, but older adults may have a harder time adjusting to bad conditions than they did when they were younger. With winter storm warnings anticipated for much of the state this weekend, the Ohio Department of Aging offers tips for older adults and caregivers to prepare and urges all Ohioans to check on older loved ones and neighbors before, during, and after the storm.

Sept. 20-24 is National Falls Prevention Awareness Week. The annual observance raises awareness that one in three older adults will fall each year, and for many of them and their loved ones, that fall can be life-changing. The Ohio Department of Aging invites all Ohioans to take advantage of four free, on-demand webinars being offered as part of the department’s 10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls campaign.
