William N. Houston Jr.

GAMBIER — William N. Houston Jr., 65, of Gambier, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019, at his daughter’s residence. He was born July 15, 1954 in Corona, California, the son of William “Nick” and Agnes (Vanek) Houston. William retired from the Mount Vernon Developmental Center as a therapeutic worker and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
William was a loving, dedicated and sensitive father, son, brother, uncle, grandparent and friend. William was full of joy and personality, able to strike up a conversation with anyone. He had an insatiable desire to learn and was an avid reader. William enjoyed gardening on Bailey Road and the family farm for many years. He loved attending annual family reunions, traveling, hiking in nature and mushroom hunting. He served on the Gambier Zoning Committee for several years, as a St. Paul’s “farm week” volunteer and as a baseball and softball coach for his children’s teams.
He is survived by his children, Melanie (Michael Cullen IV) Houston of Grandview Heights and William (Landra) Houston III of Howard; four grandchildren, Quinn Cullen, Michael “Mack” Cullen V, William “Liam” Houston IV and Walker Houston; siblings, Tom Houston of Barre, MA, Barbara (Dan) Donegan of Howard and John Houston of Eugene, OR; and mother of his children, Sherry L. (Mark) Arnold.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Caleb Tanner Clark.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 101 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where friends may call from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Rev. Karl Stevens will be officiating.
Memorial contributions in William’s name may be made to University of Findlay Endowment Fund, Caleb T. Clark scholarship fund (1000 N Main Street, Findlay, Ohio 45840).
