Moreland charged with stealing $67K from Mount Vernon business

MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man was indicted Tuesday for allegedly stealing materials from a local manufacturer and selling them online.

Ellis R. Moreland, Jr., 46, was named in a three-count felony indictment by the Knox County grand jury and charged with theft and receiving stolen property, both fourth-degree felonies, and telecommunications fraud, a felony of the third degree.

According to the indictment, Moreland allegedly took equipment from Ariel Corporation valued at $67,784.55, during the time period that started on or around June 1, 2017 and allegedly continued until December 15, 2018.

The theft and receiving stolen property charges stem from the activities between June 2017 and December 2018.

Count three of the indictment, third-degree telecommunications fraud, stems from the sale or attempted sale of the stolen property at an online auction website that exceeded $7,500 but was less than $150,000. Proceeds from the sales had netted $58,840.00.

Moreland’s first court appearance is scheduled for May 15.
