MOUNT VERNON — A Sunday morning fire on Owl Creek Church Road “extensively damaged” a house belonging to the Owl Creek Baptist Church. According to Dan Cornelius, head of trustees at Owl Creek Baptist Church, Pastor Sharon Van Winkle was at home at the time of the fire, and was woken by the sound of smoke detectors.

“The fire started in what we consider the family room, and there was nobody in the room at the time the fire started. The preacher was in the house, the smoke detector did go off, that’s what woke her up and alerted her, It was too far in progress for her to do anything about it,” said Cornelius.

Cornelius told the News that the Utica Fire Department was on scene and it was unknown as to any other department’s assistance with the blaze.

“We haven’t even had an insurance person in yet, so as far as extent of damages I don’t have anything on it. The house was extensively damaged inside, as far as what started it, we could only take a guess,” said Cornelius.
