In order to raise awareness and cultivate interest, the Ohio Division of Wildlife hosted a hunting skills event at the Knox County Fair, which Austin Levering, State Wildlife Officer for Knox County, said is a brief event with a much bigger picture in mind.
The history of the 4-acre parcel of land that sits nestled between North Mulberry Street and North Sandusky Street goes back to the 19th century, when the first Mount Vernon High School, then known as the Central Building, was built in 1859.
While the Knox County Fair is considered by its guests to be a fun week long event filled with carnival rides, funnel cakes and farm animals, the behind-the-scenes process is far more grueling than the public eye can see.
Mankind made a giant leap 50 years today when Apollo 11 landed on the moon with three of the soon to be world’s most well-known astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. History was made, and unbeknownst to most, a Mount Vernon company was a part of it.
