MOUNT VERNON — Earl T. “Tom” Smith Sr., 84, of Mount Vernon passed away Jan. 12, 2020, at Country Club Retirement Campus, surrounded by his family. He was born to Leon and Stella (Piper) Smith Sept. 10, 1935, in Croton.

Tom worked at Kenyon College as a biology laboratory technician for 30 years. As a teenager he worked for WMVO playing live music spots for the radio. He loved playing guitar and played with many groups over the years. He enjoyed very much playing in the Gospel group known as Jubilee Three, whom he played with for eight years. He was a member of the Community Christian Fellowship Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine (Hall) Smith; a daughter, Rhonda (Mike) Brooks of Mount Vernon; four sons, Bob (Dena) Smith of Tennessee, Tom (Sherry) Smith of Mount Vernon, Bill (Teresa) Smith of Apple Valley, Randy (Shannon) Smith of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Esther and Jane; twin sister, Juanita; and a brother, Paul.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Virginia, Nellie and Glenn.

Memorial contributions can be made to the College Township Fire Department or Community Christian Fellowship.

Family and friends may call Jan. 18, at Community Christian Fellowship, on the corner of Burtnett and Ohio 229, from 1–2 p.m. A celebration of Life will take place at 2 p.m. following the calling hours.
