MOUNT VERNON — Mary “Kathy” Smith, 66, of Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Nov. 5, 1953, in Mansfield, the daughter of James and Mary (Shrewsbury) McElvain. Kathy worked for McElvain Group Homes in Mansfield.

Kathy was a collector and had an extensive collection of Bradley dolls and frogs. More than anything, she enjoyed the quality time spent with her family and friends. Kathy was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Chuck Smith; children, Shelley (Kelly) Hunt of Mount Vernon, Shannon (Christina Strait) McElvain of Mount Vernon, Tim (Melissa) Smith of Fredericktown and Tom (Melissa) Smith of Milford Center; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Mike (Mary) McElvain of Kingston, Don (Kathy) McElvain of Mansfield, Dennis McElvain of Louisville, KY, and Richard McElvain of Mount Vernon.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Jim McElvain and a sister-in-law, Carol McElvain.

Friends may call Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon where a funeral service will be held Monday beginning at 11 a.m. The family will observe a private burial.
