MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man is being held at the Knox County Jail in the shooting death of a 42-year-old man.
Caleb Sarge, 27, is being held without bond on one count of murder. The charge stems from Monday, when John Serio was found deceased of a gunshot wound at Sarge’s 608 Sandusky St. residence, according to Mount Vernon Police reports.
Police were summoned to the residence at approximately 7:39 p.m. The call came through a non-emergency line and not 9-1-1, Knox County 9-1-1 Operations Assistant Bailey Reed said. The News has requested the call from MVPD.
Serio was shot in the chest, Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle said.
Knox County Prosecuting Attorney Chip McConville said Serio was dead when police arrived. The shooting may have occurred an hour or two before it was reported, McConville said.
Serio was believed to be living at Sarge’s residence at the time, McConville said.
A firearm has been recovered from the scene, according to McConville. Ownership of the gun has not been determined.
MVPD Detective Matt Haver said Sarge was taken into custody without incident.
The person reporting the shooting was not at the residence when police arrived. It has not been determined if anyone other than Sarge and Serio were at home at the time of the shooting, Haver said.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted on-scene. Haver said evidence has been collected from Sarge’s residence and the investigation is ongoing.
Sarge posted on Facebook Sunday “I’ve been so bored all (expletive) day I may just go start a fight for the of it. IDK but being bored (expletive) me the (expletive) off.”
One of Sarge’s Facebook friends asks “How’d that fight go?” in a post. A response to the post Monday, also by a Facebook friend, states “He didn’t fight anyone … he shot someone tonight.”
Sarge has no prior criminal record in Knox County. He has a few traffic offenses, the oldest dating to January. Sarge gives his address as 608 Sandusky in court records.
McConville said he intends to file charges today in Mount Vernon Municipal Court. An autopsy is expected to be performed today by the Licking County Coroner, McConville said.
