MOUNT VERNON — David LeRoy Ketner, 84, of Mount Vernon passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, at Riverside Methodist Hospital following a massive stroke that had occurred the previous Friday evening.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Joann H. (Nantz) Ketner of Mount Vernon and their only child, Lori A. Ketner of Richmond, KY. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Bruce E. Nantz of Buckhannon, WV, and by several nieces and nephews.

Dave was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice (Elder) Ketner; his father, LeRoy Ketner; and his sister, Linda A. (Ketner) Patt. He was also preceded in death by many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Dave attended and graduated from Mount Vernon High School, where he also played on the football team. He studied at the Ohio State University for one year. Dave also studied real estate, although he was never a licensed agent.

Dave was a lifelong resident of Mount Vernon except for a couple of years he spent growing up in Grove City, PA, when his father was transferred there for work at Cooper Bessemer. He was also away for the time he spent serving his country in the United States Army. He drove a military tank in the Infantry of the 4th Armor Division, Engineering Battalion while he was stationed in Germany. He served state side at Fort Worth, TX. He loved to tell stories of his days in the military serving under Sergeant Green. Dave worked at Cooper Bessemer for over 30 years. He operated the blueprint machine.

David was a man of great faith. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. He faithfully read his Bible every morning. He not only read the Bible, but he studied it, took notes, spoke of what he read and learned and did his best to model his life after his Savior, Jesus. He was baptized twice — once at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon and most recently at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Berea, KY.

David and his wife Joann both worked for Cooper Bessemer and that was how they met. After a long courtship, they married on Aug. 12, 1963. They announced the birth of their one and only child, Lori Anne, on Aug. 5, 1970. Upon Dave’s passing, Dave and Joann had been married for 58 years.

Other than for the Lord and for his family, and our many wonderful family vacations, Dave’s passion was for old cars. He loved to look at cars and talk about cars. He also very much enjoyed physical fitness and working out. He will be missed by all of his friends at the gym. He belonged to Pro Fitness USA, owned by his nephew, Dennis Bates. He loved to tell stories with his family and his friends and he could strike up a conversation with anyone — he knew no stranger. Dave will be so greatly missed by his many friends and family. “Absent from the body, present with the Lord.” 11 Corinthians 5:8

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon.

A funeral service celebrating the life of Dave will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at First Presbyterian Church, 106 North Gay St., Mount Vernon, with Rev. Ross Slaughter officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.
