Mount Vernon firefighters inspect the southeast corner of an Upper Fredericktown Road home after it was destroyed by fire Monday morning. At least one person is reported dead in the fire.

MOUNT VERNON – One person was killed in a house fire early this morning just north of Mount Vernon.

The victim’s name has not been released.

One person died in the fire and another made it out alive, according to Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chad Christopher.

The individual was transported to Knox Community Hospital by Fredericktown EMS.

No further information was available on the injured person, as of press time.

The fire was reported shortly before 3 a.m. in the 13900 block of Upper Fredericktown Road. Fire departments from Mount Vernon, Fredericktown, Homer and Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District responded. Deputies from the Knox County Sheriff Office were also on scene.

The residence, a single story ranch house, appears to be a total loss.

The Knox County Coroner and an investigator from the Ohio State Fire Marshall’s Office were called in and were on the scene before sunrise.
