MOUNT VERNON — Patricia J. Smith, 86, went home to her Lord and heavenly family Nov. 5, 2019.

Pat was born March 30, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from high school in 1950, she attended Burrough’s Comptometer School to learn keypunching skills. Soon after completing her course work, Pat was hired as a payroll clerk in the accounting department of Ford Motor Company’s River Rouge Plant. She married Kenneth J. Smith, her high school sweetheart, on Nov. 21, 1953. After moving to North Olmstead in January 1954, Pat began working at Ford’s Brookpark Engine Plant. Two years later, Ken was called to serve in the U.S. Army in Fort Rucker, Alabama, where the couple welcomed their first child. Pat ceased her commercial jobs for several years while she became an expert at diapers and negotiating arguments. Once her kids were grown, Pat returned to part-time work at Kenyon College.

Since coming to Mount Vernon in October 1969, Pat made many friends and especially enjoyed her church family at First Presbyterian Church. Pat was involved in many church activities, and served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Pat was a faithful Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer with her dear friend Eloise Hagan for almost 20 years. Pat loved to play her piano, enjoyed playing bridge, and spending the winter months on the Florida beach. She and Ken enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and many international destinations.

Pat’s greatest happiness was spending time with her grandchildren and watching them participate in their many activities.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Margaretha (Weiersmuller) Monteith; a brother, Robert J. Monteith; a sister, Elizabeth J. Becker; a niece, Sandra Becker; and her dearly loved aunt, Elizabeth Weiersmuller.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Kenneth J. Smith; children, Gregory R. (Nancy) Smith, Geoffrey L. (Rhonda) Smith and Karen E. (Jeffery) Irvin; grandchildren, Kelly, Holly, Mason, Jason (Cherish), Samuel (Sarah), Caleb and Elizabeth; and a great-granddaughter, Ellenor.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Food for the Hungry or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
