Hold off Liberty Union in four-set D-III match
MOUNT VERNON — The Fredericktown Freddies had a thrilling victory against the Liberty Union Lions on Thursday night at Ariel Arena on the campus of MVNU. The Freddies won the game in four sets, 25-15, 25-9, 24-26, 25-20.
The Freddies completely dominated the first two sets (25-15, 25-9) and it looked as if they were going to win the game in three sets, but the Liberty Union Lions made an exciting comeback in the third and fourth sets. The comeback was stopped by the Freddies, who reasserted their dominance towards the end of the final set to win the game.
Shena Beheler, the coach for the Freddies, was satisfied with the way her team played against such elite tournament competition.
“At this level, all these teams are excellent teams,” said Coach Beheler. “You have to bring your ‘A’ game. They (her team) came out really strong. We just have to finish strong. When you are playing on a roll, you have to keep that momentum going and just finish it.”
Beheler also spoke regarding the next steps in the tournament process and how her team can carry the momentum of this Thursday’s win into their next game on Saturday against Northridge.
“Hopefully, this got a lot of the jitters out and nerves (for her team in the tournament), so come Saturday they will be better prepared and ready to go,” she said. “At this level, all teams are good, so whatever team shows up to play is going to win. I think they did a lot of good things today. We’ll get into practice tomorrow and work on some other stuff that needs to be done and then hopefully be ready by Saturday.”
The Fredericktown Freddies will play in the district finals against Northridge at Ariel Arena at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
