HOWARD — Cardington scored the most points off of East Knox than any team thus far this season, but the Bulldogs had more than that total after one quarter in Friday’s 65-20 KMAC victory.
Caleb Gallwitz scored six touchdowns and rushed for 192 yards from his running-back spot for East Knox (8-0, 5-0), which should remain No. 1 in the Division VI Region 22 computer rankings. Gallwitz ran for four TDs, and caught two more from QB Kadden Lester. Lester had a pretty good day himself, going 11 of 14 for 242 yards and four TDs.
Gallwitz started the game with four scores in the first quarter alone. He ran in from 10 yards out with 8:41 to play in the period, then ripped a 50-yard run less then two minutes later (6:52) to put the Bulldogs up, 14-0.
Lester and Gallwitz then went to work, providing a 28-yard scoring connection with 3:19 to play and a 16-yarder with 40 seconds remaining. The score was 28-0 after 12 minutes.
The East Knox defense also had a lot to do, making sure that the Pirates (1-7, 1-4) didn’t do much. The Bulldogs had three sacks, 1.5 from Dawson David, more than seven tackles for loss and two interceptions. East Knox’s ferocious rush gave it the next score, a safety with 11:43 to play in the first half, and Gallwitz closed the ensuing drive with an 18-yard TD run at the 10:56 mark.
Cardington reached the end zone once in the half on Joe Denney’s 1-yard run with 7:15 remaining, but Lester hit Braden Kannady for a 30-yard TD pass 50 seconds later to take the halftime lead to 44-7.
Even with a running clock for the second half, East Knox scored two more times. In the third period, Gage Steinmetz grabbed a 57-yard TD pass from Lester with 10:17 to play, and Gallwitz closed his day with a 10-yard TD run with 2:39 to go for a 58-7 lead.
Substitutes took over the game in the fourth, and the Pirates took advantage with two Ayden Plowman scoring runs (33, 53 yards). Ian Toller found the end zone for the Bulldogs on a 9-yarder.
Chase Darr ran for 46 yards on two carries for East Knox, and Toller had four carries for 33 yards. Steinmetz had a big night with 112 yards on five catches, and Gallwitz and Weston Melick each added two receptions for 44 and 41 yards, respectively.
Plowman had eight carries for 105 yards for Cardington, and QB Nathan Hickman completed 8 of 20 passes for 93 yards. Trey Brininger had four catches for 66 yards.
East Knox can clinch a share of the KMAC championship by beating host Mount Gilead next Friday at 7 p.m. Cardington will be home against Centerburg.
