WOOSTER — Wyatt Gregory led a second-half Mount Vernon charge which tied the game after a two-score deficit on Friday, but host Wooster scored a touchdown with 5:14 to play in the game to edge the Yellow Jackets, 35-28.

Mount Vernon (4-3, 1-2) outgained the Generals 381-372, with Gregory providing 182 of those yards on 32 carries. QB Trey Davidson threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-26 passing. The defense gave up 172 yards on 38 carries, but Wooster QB Owen Roach completed 15 of 20 passes for 155 yards and one TD.

When Brayden Taylor ran in from 9 yards out with 8:17 to play in the third quarter, it gave Wooster its second two-touchdown lead of the game, 28-14. But the Jackets had time to drive for a score before the end of the period, and Gregory’s three-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left cut the Mount Vernon deficit to 28-21.

A stop on the Generals’ first fourth-quarter series gave the Jackets a chance to tie the game. After marching down to the Wooster 1, Gregory pounded in with 8:15 to play in the game that tied the score at 28. But Roach led a drive on the Generals’ ensuing possession, and at the 5:14 mark, Taylor scored for the third time from 8 yards out for a 35-28 lead. The Jackets were stymied on its next drive, and Wooster ran out the clock for the victory.

In the first quarter, the Generals scored two touchdowns in succession, as Micah McKee caught an 8-yard TD pass from Roach with 5:50 remaining and Ian Miller ran in from 40 yards out with 2:04 to play.

Mount Vernon got right back into it to start the second quarter, as Gavin Moyer caught a Trey Davidson 21-yard pass to cut the lead to 14-7. Taylor’s 9-yard run took the Wooster to lead to 21-7, but Moyer caught his second TD pass of the game, a 15-yarder, to pare the lead to 21-14.

Davidson also ran well, gaining 50 yards on nine carries, and Moyer was the leading receiver with six catches for 105 yards and two scores. Ryan Tiell caught a 22-yard pass for his only reception.

Miller rushed for 83 yards on 17 carries for the Generals, and Taylor gained 80 yards on 17 totes. Jack Williams had three catches for 33 yards to lead six Wooster receivers.
