MOUNT VERNON — A car smashed into a corner bookstore in the downtown area on Thursday night.

According to the police report, around 6:15 p.m., a northbound 2019 Cadillac XTS driven by Harold Lee, 83, Homer, ran a red light on South Main Street and Ohio Avenue, striking an eastbound 2006 Honda CRV driven by Sarah Hines, 31, Bellville. The force of the crash caused Lee to veer to the left, striking a fire hydrant then crashing into the front of Paragraphs Bookstore, 229 S. Main St.

Preliminary reports were no serious injuries but one was examined later at the hospital.

Lee was cited for a red light violation.

Paragraphs Bookstore has been downtown for 16 years, the building is owned by Mount Vernon Nazarene University and cleanup efforts were quickly underway after the accident.

The bookstore is planning on opening for business as usual.
