MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets girl’s soccer team faced off against their rivals: The Lancaster Golden Gales on Saturday. The game was very equally matched in terms of ball possession and shots on goal and the result of the match ended up being a 2-2 tie.
The first two goals of the game came fairly quickly in the first half. The first goal was kicked by Carmen Morris of the Golden Gales at minute 33:23. This goal was quickly answered by Mount Vernon’s Stella Bainbridge, who kicked the second goal of the game at minute 32:24.
The Yellow Jackets (4-6-2) had a slight edge over their rivals at the end of the first half when Sara Davidson scored a goal at minute 6:02 to bring the score to 2-1 Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jacket lead, however, evaporated quickly when Josselyn Jewell kicked a goal for the Golden Gales at minute 33:08 of the second half of the game. The tie and the evenly matched playing style of both teams persisted until the end of the game.
The Jackets were disappointed to give up their early lead and only tie with their rivals instead of win against them, but they were happy enough with the tie to see the bright side of at least not losing to their rivals.
“It was a pretty evenly matched game,” said Mount Vernon Coach Bill Lonsinger. “Two to 2, we’ll take it. Of course the girls wanted to win, but we’re happy with this result; not satisfied, but OK with it. It was a hard fought game. This was a big rivalry game for us and it’s always a really close game with this team.”
Mount Vernon’s junior varsity team was shut out, 4-0. Maddie Henricksen made 14 saves in goal for the Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets play their next game Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Loudonville.
