MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets’ girls tennis team had to fight for a win on Monday, pulling out a 3-2 win at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
The Jackets’ number two doubles pair of Kaylee Burke and Anna Dinnen pulled off a big win over Big Walnut’s duo of Linsey Stevens and Allyson Steven. After losing the first set, they came back and took their match, 1-6, 6-4, 10-4.
“They focused their game and didn’t lose that focus until securing the victory,” said Mount Vernon tennis coach Steve Tier. “This was their first win — a big step forward for them competition-wise. They did it after a series of close matches that didn’t go their way, and it helped Mount Vernon gain their first team victory of the season.”
The Jackets also got a win from number two singles player Lucy Ogle, who struggled her way to a 7-6 (2), 7-5 victory over Addy Smith of Big Walnut. Marah Staats – the Jackets’ number three singles player – made it look easy by comparison, winning her match decisively over Karen Ambrose of Big Walnut, 6-2, 6-1.
“Lucy Ogle regained her focus in time to win,” Tier said.
Jackets’ number one singles player Justine Hull came up short in her match, dropping a hard-fought match, 2-6, 5-7, to Big Walnut’s Kina Ehlers.
Emma Annette and Molly Clow, Mount Vernon’s number one doubles team, started out well, but fell to Big Walnut’s Clara Matos and Avery Wager, 6-1, 2-6, 4-10.
The Jackets’ next match will be Wednesday at Delaware Hayes High School.
