MOUNT VERNON — From the moment of calling 911 for an emergency to being discharged from the hospital, first responders and professional healthcare workers do not always receive the praise and recognition they deserve. In response to this, Mount Vernon plays host to two events Saturday, Aug. 24, to do just that.
The Rastin Challenge, a series of tests of strength, skill, speed, and agility takes place Aug. 24, 2019, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon’s Ariel-Foundation Park. The inaugural Kokosing River BrewFest will follow, from 1 – 10 p.m. just north of the river on South Main Street.
Named after Ariel Corporation’s Tom Rastin, the iconic Rastin Tower is one of Mount Vernon’s premier attractions. The Rastin Challenge is in its third year and offers spectators the chance to see law enforcement and fire/EMS professionals compete for bragging rights in team events including obstacle courses, K9 competition, and the signature Rastin Tower Climb where firefighters in full regalia compete to ascend the 140-foot high, 224 circular steps around the former Pittsburgh Plate Glass smokestack. Kids can compete in modified challenges including a 1-mile run, relays, and an obstacle course. There is no admission fee for spectators. Proceeds from the Rastin Challenge go toward cash prizes and scholarships for first responders.
The Kokosing River BrewFest will continue festivities downtown in a less strenuous fashion. In one of Mount Vernon’s historic districts, attendees will be able to sample their choices of different craft microbreweries from Ohio, enjoy tasty delectables from different food trucks, and listen to some of the favorite local entertainers and bands.
Visitors may also enjoy the different shops and restaurants in the central business district throughout the afternoon and evening. Ticket prices are available for those who wish to sample beer while discounted pricing is an option for designated drivers. BrewFest proceeds will go to The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital which is currently constructing a new Family Care Center for the community.
