MOUNT VERNON — An investigation is continuing after an incident occurred in early May where a Mount Vernon man was struck in the face and later died.

The original incident happened on May 1 where a 52-year-old man and a group of juveniles had a confrontation near the basketball court area at the Hiawatha pool complex and one of the group allegedly punched the man in the face.

According to the police and rescue call reports, after being hit, the man fell, hit his head on the concrete and lost consciousness.

The group then left the scene according to witnesses and emergency services attended to the man, who was taken to the hospital. He then died on May 15.

Also according to the incident report, the officer on the scene was able to make contact with the alleged suspect who had returned the area where the incident had occurred.

The investigation is still ongoing and is awaiting toxicology and autopsy results which take six to eight weeks, said prosecuting attorney Chip McConville.
