MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon City School Board approved two contracts during its special meeting held Thursday afternoon at the board office.
“Today is about timing and getting things moving forward with our Education Gateway project,” said superintendent Bill Seder at the start of the meeting. The Education Gateway project includes numerous upgrades, including an extension of Yellow Jacket Drive and the construction of a new field house and bus garage/maintenance building.
The board gave its support for a contract with Adena Corporation to construct the new bus garage and maintenance building and field house.
Seder noted that construction of the field house will be privately funded by the Yellow Jacket Athletic Boosters and donations, while the bus garage will utilize public funds.
A second contract will lease the lot adjacent to Yellow Jacket Stadium, where the concession stand and restrooms are located, to the athletic boosters. This will allow the boosters to demolish and build a new structure on the lot.
“It’s needed,” said Nussbaum. “The (current) one is probably approaching 40, 45 years old.”
Nussbaum stated that demolition of the structure will likely take place in the next few weeks. Construction of its replacement will begin in April and if all goes well, be completed before the first home football game.
After approving the two contracts, the board held an executive session to discuss the appointment and employment of an official. No action was taken.
