MOUNT VERNON – A Howard woman was cited for failure to control after driving onto Public Square and striking the railing around the Civil War monument.

According to Mount Vernon Police Department reports, Shannon Reynolds, 50, was traveling northbound on South Main Street Monday evening and for reasons unknown, traveled onto Public Square 163 feet up the sidewalk, striking the fence and the Civil War monument.

Mount Vernon Police and Fire departments responded. Paramedics evaluated Reynolds, and according to Chief Chad Christopher, “had some scrapes on her knee.”

Reynolds did not require transport to the hospital.

Howard’s 2012 Hyundai Sonata had been leaking gasoline and oil, and the MVFD placed absorbent powder down. The car was towed from the scene.

The fence was replaced in September 2014 after a crash in April on the square. The work was completed then by Kepple’s Sheet Metal of Mount Vernon.

The cost of replacing the fence at that time was covered by the driver’s insurance.

The Parks Department has hung yellow caution tape across the damaged section.

The department has started on an insurance claim process.

“An entire inspection of the Civil War Monument will have to be done,” Safety-Service Director Joel Daniels said.
