MOUNT VERNON — After coasting for 2 1/2 quarters, the Danville Blue Devils stepped on the gas in the big way Tuesday.

The Devils went on a late 18-2 run to stun the Fredericktown Freddies, 42-34, in the consolation game of the Colonial City Classic, held at The Hive in Mount Vernon.

Fredericktown held a 28-20 lead late in the third period when the run began. It was sparked by a 3-pointer by Bri Staats, off an assist by Jordan Elliott. Danville then took its first lead early in the fourth period off a pair of free throws by Melissa Mickley.

“They just kind of realized it was time to pick it up,” said Danville head coach Matt Proper. “I tried to forewarn them that, after we played an emotional game Monday, there might be a lull to them. We didn’t have energy. So we had to find a way to get some energy.”
